Most owners furnishing a short-term rental for the first time buy twice — once on instinct, then again after the first season shows them what actually breaks, what guests complain about, and what photographs well. We’ve already paid that tuition. This list is what survived it.

Two things that change what you buy.
- If your cleaner supplies linens, skip the sheets and towels. Several of the housekeeping partners we work with in Mammoth and Park City bring their own. You’ll still want mattress protectors, duvet inserts and duvet covers — the protectors especially, since that’s the item that actually protects the mattress and the one cleaners never cover.
- Alarm requirements differ by market. Park City requires interconnected smoke and CO alarms. Mammoth Lakes does not, as of today. If you’re in Park City, the wireless-interconnect sets on the list satisfy the requirement without needing an electrician.
